UST Growling Tigers Escapes NU Bulldogs

The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers relied on their outside shooting to squeeze out a thrilling 59-58 win against vastly improved National University (NU) Bulldogs on Thursday in the UAAP Season 73 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Growling Tigers hit 5 triples in the payoff period to overcome a sluggish start and register their 3rd win in 5 games.

Trailing by two, 49-47, midway in the 4th period, an unlikely hero emerged from UST.

Carmelo Afuang scored 9 of the next 12 points of the Tigers to grab the momentum going into the final 2 minutes of the see-saw battle.

The 6-foot-3 Afuang, one of UST’s “undersized” big men, drilled in a surprise three-pointer to cap off his heroics, padding its lead to 6 points, 59-53, with 2:19 left.

NU still had a chance to save the game, which it controlled for the most part, but could not execute properly against UST’s tenacious defense.

A broken play led to Emmanuel Mbe’s basket that closed the gap, 59-58, with 4.8 seconds remaining. But the Tigers escaped with the win as the Bulldogs were 3 fouls short from getting to the penalty situation.

Once again, the San Antonio Spurs are dominating, crushing the 2nd seeded Dallas Mavericks back to the ground. George Hill was as spectacular scoring 21 points, 10 came from the fourth quarter. Manu Ginobili lead the Spurs with 26 points. The Dallas Mavericks came out flat, staring at a 22 points deficit 19-41. But the never say die attitude by Dork Nowitzki and a great game by Rodrigue Beaubois saw the Mavs starting to trim the lead and even lead on a three pointer by Nowitzki, 57-56 but Ginobili responded with a three on his own as the Spurs regain the lead and Tim Duncan finished of a lay-up for a 61-57 lead. The Mavs keep fighting back but the Spurs never give the lead as they withstood every Mavs run down the stretch with the help of George Hill. Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 points, Caron Butler had 25 points and Rodrigue Beaubois finished with 16 points for the Mavs. The San Antonio Spurs will face the Phoenix Suns in the 2nd round.

The Talk N Text Tropang Texters are the new Philippine Cup Champions as they outlasted the gritty and determined Alaska Aces. After a 6 year drought, the Tropang Texters bagged its second title in an All-Filipino Cup after the 2003 All FIlipino Cup title..Mac Cardona made another huge game..while rookie sensation Jason Castro has also made an important contribution with the team,, making 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists, together with 2 steals.

After trailing mostly in the game, the last time 63-76, the Alaska Aces made a huge comeback with Reynel Hugnatan-led Aces by scoring 13 of his 17 points in that span highlighted by the three point play of Joe Devance, able to tie it 84 all. Two more deadlocks ensued after that, the last at 89 on a Ranidel de Ocampo short stab, before Harvey Carey's baseline jumper gave TNT the lead for good at 91-89. The De La Salle Green Archers made a gallant effort to trounce the San Beda Red Lions 63-62 in the final four of the Philippine Collegiate Chmpionships. JV Casio, Rico Maeirhofer and Peejay Barua provided the spark for the Archers. Casio made the winning basket on a get away lay-up from Peejay Barua's steal. Maeirhofer paced the Green Archers with 17 points.

Trailing by 15 points in the 2nd quarter, the Archers made a spirited comeback with timely baskets and good defense, nd held on to beat the Red Lions.

After a 6 year drought, the Ateneo Blue Eagles are now back in the top, defeating the long time nemesis La Salle Green Archers, 62-51. Stingy-defense was the key to the victory for the Blue Eagles, as they limited the Archers with only 51 points, its the lowest output by La Salle this season. Chris Tiu, after a 2 point output in Game 1,scored 16 points, 14 of them in the first half as he was responsible of spearheading the attack. After leading 20-17, Chris Tiu unleashes a 7-0 run on his won giving Ateneo the lead 27-17. The Blue Eagles controlled the game and was championship-ready, as they made the largest lead of 15 points 41-26 at halftime. The Green Archers just refused ot give up as they made a huge comeback behind JV Casio and Rico Maeirhofer. The 5th year guard Casio unleashes five of his three pointers in the third quarter pushes La Salle within striking distance. Rico Maeirhofer, also made the damage in the third quarter, the Green Archers gained the momentum. With 1:31 to play in the third quarter, Maeirhofer got the second technical foul of waving a "dirty finger" with the disagreement from the La Salle bench. He was ejected in the game, still the Green Archers cut the deficit to 3 points, 47-50 by the end of the third quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Blue Eagles use their swarming defense, as they held on the lead. With Nonoy Baclao, making key defensive stops, blocking PJ Walsmham's and the offensive foul on JV Casio,the Eagles are roaring for the championship. Baclao was named the Finals MVP. Nickname as the "Baby Shaq", the Cebuano cager will be suiting up in a new team as the PBA resumes its games on October 4. Borboran, in the other hand, might be the good choice for Alaska. He can play both the no 2 and 3 positions, he can shoot from the outside, versatile and has the quickness of a guard. It will give the Aces more speed and agility. Ateneo Blue Eagles prove once again why they were the no 1 team in the UAAP, outlasting the La Salle Green Archers 69-61. Rookie Ryan Buanafe, provided the much needed firepower in the first half as he scored all of his 12 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists. With Chris Tiu and Nonoy Baclao sat out the most of the first half because of foul trouble, Jai Reyes came out blazing and provided the lift, hitting 3 3-pointers. Trailing 26-29 after a La Salle run, the Eagles closed out the first half with 10-to-0 spurt. Back-to-back baskets by their center Rabeh Al-Hussaini in the third quarter, the Eagles were ahead for good as they made the largest lead of 14 points. Al-Hussaini's dominance was the big thorn and problem for the Archers. He scored 20 of his 31 points in the second half and finishing the game with 10 rebounds.Chris Tiu was nowhere to be found as he was affected early by foul trouble and finishing the game with 2 points. Another unsung hero was Nonoy Baclao making 2 straight rejections on James Mangahas and Rico Maierhofer in La Salle's attempt to trim the lead. He finished with 7 block shots.. JV Casio still managed to score 20 points on 8 out of 24 shooting and Maierhofer finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds. With a sellout crowd of 23000 in Game 1, and this would even be better in the next game this thursday. Ateneo Vs La Salle once again..

The biggest,loudest and the popular rivalry in the UAAP will entertain the nation once again as the newest basketball showdown is coming. La Salle and Ateneo will again square-off in the finals at the 71st UAAP Mens basketball this September 21. Disposing their respective counterparts of Far Eastern University and University of the East in the semifinals,respectively, the two teams are aching for the much awaited and historic match-up in the UAAP Finals.
La-Salle was the first to enter in the finals with a squeaker of a win against the talented Far eastern University. The Tamarraws held off the lead and once led 10 points in the first half, only to lose the lead in the closing 2 minutes in the fourth quarter. James Mangahas provides the spark for the Archers in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of his 20 points, including the go-ahead three point-play in the dying seconds of the game. FEU has the chance to send the game into overtime with Marc Baracael shooting 2 free throws. Under extreme pressure, Baracael missed the first and eventually missed the second. That was the last hope for the Tamarraws as they have missed the Finals once again. The Archers is 12 out of 12 when capturing the twice-to-beat advantage barging into the finals.
In the next game, Ateneo Blue Eagles showed why they are the number one team in the eliminations as they clobbered University of the East 70-50. It was a hard fought battle in the first quarter as the Red Warriors led by five points with James Martinez making 5 straight points. They even led by 6 points 11-5. That would be the last ditch effort for the Warriors as the Blue Eagles finally found their mark. Jai Reyes and Eric Salamat provide the explosion in the first quarter as they combined for 13 points in the first quarter alone. Back to back treys by Reyes and a basket by Salamat, brought the lead back to Ateneo 13-11 and eventually stretched their lead to 11 points 32-21 as Al-Hussaini provides the added lift for the Eagles. In the third quarter, Nonoy Baclao takes over. His all round performance was very evident in the third quarter, providing hustle points and key defensive stops as the Eagles have the lead of 28 points 56-28 bridging from the third to the fourth quarter. The Ateneo Blue Eagles never look back as they barged into the finals once again after a one year absence. They will face their long time nemesis La Salle University.

Keith Agovida of the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers fired a stunning 82 points in a win against Mapua Red Robins, 127-49 in the 84th NCAA juniors basketball tournament. He was deadly from the field making 36 field goal conversions out of 50 attempts and 10 made free throws out of 16 attempts.Agovida scored on nearly every possession,tallying 23, 13, 20 and 26 in the first, second, third and fourth quarters respectively during the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) game. The 18 year old, 6 foot 1 scoring machine, has beaten the 79 point performance of Allan Caidic in the PBA in 1987. He also shattered the scoring record of 81 points set by Kobe Bryant in the NBA. Agovida, played for only 37 minutes in the game,also eclipse the previous high of 71 points posted by Letran Squire Marlon Bola Bola in the 70s. However, he did not surpass the record of 100 points by Wilt Chamberlain and the 105 point performance by the Swift Import Tonny Harris in the PBA.

Jason Castro will be back in town soon as he was still playing in the Malaysian Invitational for his second tournament with the Singapore Slingers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Castro played his first tournament with the Slingers in the recent Brunei Cup. He was named league MVP in that tournament, leading the team to the championship.He is also under contract with the Slingers in the National Basketball League in Australia. Since the Slingers withdraws from the tournament, Castro wants out and will be expected to join the Phone Pals soon. The standout and versatile guard of the Philippine Christian University, was picked 3rd overall by the Phone Pals in the recently concluded PBA draft. Negotiations is still in progress while the player is abroad and he is likely to get an P8.7 million package in three years. He is plan to practice with the Phone Pals after the Malaysian Invitational.

New York Knicks picks Patrick Ewing Jr

Following the footsteps of his father, Patrick Ewing Jr,the eldest son of the hall of fame father Patrick Ewing, has been acquired from Houston to New York for the draft rights to center Frederic Weis. Patrick Ewing Jr a 6-8, 240-pounds, was originally drafted by Sacramento in the 2008 NBA Draft as the 43rd overall selection. He played his first two collegiate seasons at Indiana University before transferring to Georgetown, where his hall of fame father also played in college. As a senior with the Hoyas during the 2007-08 season, Ewing averaged 6.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 34 games, winning the Big East Sixth Man of the Year award.

Iranian 7 footer center signs with the Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies signed free-agent center Hamed Haddadi, who led all 2008 Olympians in rebounding and blocks. He is also the only player to average a double-double (16.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.6 blocks) in Olympic competition while playing five games for the Iranian National Team. The 7-2 Ahvaz, 254-pound center, Iran native was scouted by the Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace prior to the olympics in Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League in Salt Lake City, Utah,where the Iranian National Team played exhibition games against the NBA teams. The 23-year-old, who was not selected in the 2004 NBA Draft, recently averaged 14.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 25.5 minutes in two games for the Iranian team against NBA competition at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Revue.

Lithuania Star Retires

Ramunas Siskauskas retires from his national team, Lithuania. Siskauskas,the Euroleague MVP last season after leading CSKA Moscow to the title, played in his third Olympics this summer in Beijing, suffered from a string of losses in the semifinal game against Spain and the bronze medal game against Argentina. At the age of 30, Siskauskas has another chance of being with the team in the next Olympics in 2012 and to the world championships this 2010 in Turkey, decided a year ago and finalizes his decision after Beijing Olympics. "The summers in the national team are exhausting and it’s time to retire. Young players will replace me.” Siskauskas average eleven points and four rebounds per game in Beijing Olympics. And the gallant stand that he showed in this Olympics is one of the most outstanding performances that must be remembered of.

Jimenez Retires from Spanish National Team

Spain’s long-time captain Carlos Jimenez has decided to retire from the national team. The 32-year-old Jimenez, who averaged 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds at the Olympics, signed off with a silver medal at the Beijing Games.Jimenez played 25 minutes in arguably the greatest gold-medal game of all time, a 118-107 defeat to the United States, scoring 12 points and grabbing three rebounds. Jimenez made his debut with the national team in 1997 and went on to earn 187 caps.The Unicaja Malaga forward led Spain to silver medals at the 1999, 2003 and 2007 EuroBaskets, bronze in 2001, and gold at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

Milwaukee Buck vs Golden State Warriors in China

The NBA will be back in China this October, featuring two games between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Golden State Warriors in Beijing and Guangzhou. NBA China Games 2008 will tip off in Guangzhou on Oct. 15 when the Bucks and Warriors meet at the Guangzhou Gymnasium with a capacity of 13,000. The two teams then travel to Beijing to play on Oct. 18 at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Arena, an NBA-style arena with a capacity of 17,173. Following the China Games, the multi-purpose arena is expected to host basketball games, other sporting events, concerts and festivals.NBA China Games 2008 will be the league’s third set of preseason games in China. In 2004, the NBA became the first American professional sports league to stage games in China, with two games between the Houston Rockets and the Sacramento Kings in Shanghai and Beijing. Last October, NBA China Games 2007 featured three games between the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Orlando Magic and the Team China All-Stars in Shanghai and Macao. The NBA’s first trip to China dates back to 1979 when the Washington Wizards played against the Chinese National Team.

NBA Players Grab a lot of Medals in the Olympics

Aside from the US National Players bagging the gold medal, there are so many NBA players of the other countries earned a medal in the recently concluded Beijing Olympics. A total of 42 current and former NBA players were on the 12 Olympic rosters, the highest number since NBA players began participating in the Olympics in 1992. Ten Olympic teams had at least one current or former player on their roster.

Chinese National Team Member signed with the Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Sun Yue to a multi-year contract, it was announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.Originally selected by the Lakers in the second round (40th overall) of 2007 NBA draft, the 6-9 guard started for the Chinese National Team this past month in the men’s basketball tournament at the Beijing Olympics. In six games, Sun averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.33 steals in 28.0 minutes. Playing for the Beijing Aoshen Olympians of the American Basketball Association for the past three seasons, Sun, 23, was named First Team All-ABA in both 2007 and 2008 while earning Second-Team All-ABA honors in 2006. Posting a 12-point, 14-rebound, 12-assist, 8-block, 4-steal triple-double against the L.A. Aftershock during his rookie season in the ABA (2005-06), Sun averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 10.5 assists in 2006-07 when the team played its home games at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA before moving to Singapore for the 2007-08 season.

2 Time All-star Portland Center Died

SECAUCUS, N.J., Aug. 26, 2008 -- Kevin Duckworth, a two-time All-Star who played for five teams, most famously with the Portland Trail Blazers, during his 11-year NBA career has died in Gleneden Beach, Ore., where he was representing the Trail Blazers on a 19-city summer tour. He was 44. Kevin Duckworth was the 10th leading scorer (7,188) and rebounder (3,327) in Portland history. Duckworth was a key member of Portland's Finals teams in 1990 and 1992, as he started at center for the Trail Blazers in 402 of the 410 regular season games in his first five seasons with the team. At 7-0, 275, Duckworth was one of the bigger players in the league at the time (we had not seen the likes of a Shaquille O'Neal or Yao Ming). And while he was anchor in the paint, Duckworth's size never seemed to be a millstone around the collective neck of the lithe and speedy (Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, Clifford Robinson to name a few) Trail Blazers. Duckworth averaged 15.3 points and 6.9 boards per game in his first five Blazers seasons.

After losing the best player in the conference Jay jay Helterbrand in Game 2, and injury from their star player, Mark Caguioa, the Gin Kings fought til the end using their heart and will determination. With Ronald Tubid back in the fold, and playing below 100%, Ginebra Gin Kings still manage to win against the deeper and complete line-up of the Air 21 Express. They use the old trademark, way back in the old days,the Never-Say-Die attitude. Ginebra could not attain this championship if not on their import, Chris Alexander (the best import in the conference) and veteran Erick Menk.

OVERVIEW OF BASKETBALL

James Naismith, a Canadian educator and sports recreationalist, invented the game of basketball in 1891 in response to a request by leaders of the YMCA to develop "a rigourous and interesting form of indoor entertainment." Naismith and his helpers spent 14 days in Springfield, MA, piecing together the rules for the game of basketball. It was initially played with nine players on the court per team and with peach baskets as hoops. The ball itself was a soccer ball.

Throughout its infancy, basketball was played by professionals who barn-stormed their way across the United States. The NBA was formed in 1946 and though the league produced some early stars and held competitive games, it lacked the exposure that the other major sports received. It wasn't until the late 1950's and the early 1960's that the NBA's popularity expanded as did that of the game of basketball itself, when Bill Russel and his Boston Celtics teams rang up eight consecutive championships.

Basketball is a game that is now played and enjoyed by people of all ages and sexes. The popularity of the game reached new heights in the late 1970s, due largely to the Larry Bird vs. Magic Johnson matchup in the 1979 NCAA National Championship game. Bird's Indiana State team lost to Johnson's Michigan State team but the two men then went on to play for the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers repectively, where their teams met several more times during the 1980's to battle for the NBA crown. Their rivalry fueled tremendous interest in their sport.

Michael Jordan, arguably the finest NBA player ever, led his Chicago Bulls teams to six NBA championships throughout the 1990's, bringing the popularity of basketball to even greater heights and giving Jordan one of the most recognizable faces anywhere. Though invented in the United States, basketball's popularity has spread to Europe and every other continent. It is a game now played and watched world-wide.

Over the years, the rules of basketball and the game itself have been refined. Now, five players per team are allowed on the court at once, and the peach baskets used by Naismith have been replaced by iron rims measuring 19 inches (48cm) in diameter, with a nylon or cotton netting beneath it. An NBA court measures 94 feet (28.65 meters) in length and 50 feet (15.24 meters) in width. College, high school, and grammar school court sizes all differ. Two points are awarded for a made basket and one point is awarded for a free throw, a shot taken from the free-throw line 15 feet (4.57 meters) from the basket. Free throws are awarded primarily when a player is fouled during the act of shooting. A player who commits six fouls in an NBA game is disqualified. For other levels, a player is disqualified after 5 fouls.

Though the 3 point shot was used in the rebel ABA (American Basketball Association) league, the shot did not actually come into favor in the NBA until 1979 and with the NCAA until 1980. A shot made from beyond the three point arc (19' 9" (6 meters) in college, and 22' to 23'9" (7 meters) in the NBA) is alloted three points. The advent of the three point shot has greatly changed the game of basketball. Coaches now have their players put in long hours perfecting their long range shooting, instead of simply shooting shots closer to the basket.

The NCAA's annual tournament, termed "March Madness," has become one of the most popular sports events of all time. Viewers tune in to TV's and attend games to urge on their favories from the field of 64, to see who will become the next National Champion. Universities like UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Indiana, Duke, and Kansas have all won multiple national championships.
